Online Matching for Scheduling Problems

چکیده

In this work an alternative online variant of the matching problem in bipartite graphs is presented. It is motivated by a scheduling problem in an online environment. In such an environment, a task is unknown up to its disclosure. However, in that moment it is not necessary to take a decision on the service of that particular task. In reality, an online scheduler has to decide on how to use the current resources. Therefore, our problem is called online request server matching (ORSM). It diiers substantially from the online bipartite matching problem of Karp et al. KVV90]. Hence, the analysis of an optimal, deterministic online algorithm for the ORSM problem results in a smaller competitive ratio of 1:5. We also introduce an extension to a weighted bipartite matching problem. A lower bound of p 5+1 2 1:618 and an upper bound of 2 is given for the competitive ratio.

Online Scheduling of Jobs for D-benevolent instances On Identical Machines

We consider online scheduling of jobs with specic release time on m identical machines. Each job has a weight and a size; the goal is maximizing total weight of completed jobs. At release time of a job it must immediately be scheduled on a machine or it will be rejected. It is also allowed during execution of a job to preempt it; however, it will be lost and only weight of completed jobs contri...

Online Scheduling Intervals and t-Intervals

A t-interval is a union of at most t half-open intervals on the real line. The special case where t = 1 is an interval. Often, the requests for contiguous allocation of a linear resource can be modeled by a sequence of t-intervals. We consider the problems of online scheduling intervals and t-intervals, which show up in Video-on-Demand services, high speed networks and molecular biology, among ...

Stochastic Online Scheduling with Precedence Constraints

We consider the preemptive and non-preemptive problems of scheduling jobs with precedence constraints on parallel machines with the objective to minimize the sum of (weighted) completion times. We investigate an online model in which the scheduler learns about a job when all its predecessors have completed. For scheduling on a single machine, we show matching lower and upper bounds of Θ(n) and ...

Online request server matching

In this report we study a new variant of an online bipartite matching problem, which can be interpreted as a scheduling problem. Then, we have one resource, called server, which is available for one unit in every step of a discrete time model. At most one task with unit demand can occur per time step. It is called request, and speciies a set of time steps when the serving is accepted. These tim...

Auction-SC – An Auction-Based Framework for Real-Time Task Assignment in Spatial Crowdsourcing

A new platform, termed spatial crowdsourcing (SC), is emerging that enables a requester to commission workers to physically travel to some specified locations to perform a set of spatial tasks (i.e., tasks related to a geographical location and time). For spatial crowdsourcing to scale to millions of workers and tasks, it should be able to efficiently assign tasks to workers, which in turn cons...
